Son of the late James and the late Bridget Lynch Gallacher. Brother of Henry Gallacher of 158 Dundyvan Rd, Coatbridge. From the 1891 Census - Address - 22 Carrick St, Coatbridge - James Gallacher aged 29, Bridget Gallacher aged 26, Henry Gallacher aged 5, Patrick Gallacher aged 2. Patrick left his effects to his brother Henry which included scissors, knife, rosary, letters, photos, cigarette case and blue linen cap. Henry was his only relative alive along with Henry's 4 children (James, Elizabeth, Francis and Bridget). Patrick's Pension was awarded to his brother Henry on the 26/03/1919.

Cemetery / Memorial Information

Etaples Military Cemetery is the largest CWGC cemetery in France. It is located near Boulogne on the former site of a large military hospital complex used by the Allies during the First World War.The cemetery contains 10,769 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, the earliest dating from May 1915. Hospitals were stationed again at Etaples during the Second World War. The cemetery was used for burials from January 1940 until the evacuation at the end of May 1940. After the war, a number of graves were brought into the cemetery from other French burial grounds. Of the 119 Second World War burials, 38 are unidentified.

Additional Information

Patrick was formerly with the Royal Field Artillery (133930) and enlisted on the 20/04/1916. He proceeded to France on the 29/10/1916 and arrived in the field on the 09/11/1916. Patrick transferred to the 19th Divisional Signal Company Royal Engineers on the 28/04/1917. They were part of the 19th (Western) Division. In late 1918 the Division were involved in the Battle of the Selle, 17th - 25th October 1918, the Battle of Valenciennes, 1st - 2nd November 1918, the Battle of the Sambre, 4th November 1918 and the passage of the Grand Honelle, 5th - 7th November 1918. Patrick was wounded in January 1918 and survived until the Armistice only to die of Bronchial Pneumonia in the 26th General Hospital in Etaples two days later. The Division book states : "During the final advance the Division had lost 11 Officers and 126 Other Ranks Killed, 41 Officers and 784 Other Ranks Wounded and 1 Officer and 46 Other Ranks Missing. Captures included 212 Prisoners, 2 Field-Guns, 45 Machine-Guns and 9 Trench-Mortars. Many Machine-Guns captured were never collected, as there were no opportunities to salvage the area".
