The depot was responsible for various functions, including : Training and Recruitment - The depot trained naval personnel, providing them with essential skills and knowledge required for their roles at sea. New recruits received instruction on naval procedures, weaponry, and discipline. Logistics and Supplies: As a logistical centre, the depot managed the storage, distribution, and maintenance of naval supplies, equipment, and provisions. It ensured that ships were well-stocked and ready for deployment. Repair and Maintenance - The depot facilitated repairs and maintenance of naval vessels. Shipwrights, engineers, and craftsmen worked here to keep the fleet seaworthy. Damaged ships were brought to the depot for necessary repairs. Administration and Records - Administrative offices at the depot handled paperwork, personnel records, and communication. They coordinated naval operations, tracked personnel movements, and managed payroll. Strategic Coordination - The depot played a strategic role in coordinating naval activities. It communicated with other naval bases, ships, and command centres. During wartime, it contributed to intelligence gathering and strategic planning. Support during Conflicts - During wars and conflicts, the depot mobilized resources, provided medical aid, and dispatched reinforcements.
