Son of John Greenaway (abt 1852 - 1924) and Marion (nee Park) Greenaway (26/03/1855 - 1912) of 32A Quarry St, Station Rd, Coatdyke. Alexander had a brother on active service and another returned from the Army and was working in Munitions. From the 1901 Census - Address - 362 Main St, Coatbridge - John Greenaway aged 49, Marion Greenaway aged 45, Andrew Greenaway aged 20, David Greenaway aged 15 (20/12/1886 - 1946), John Greenaway aged 13, Elizabeth Greenaway aged 11, Janet Greenaway aged 8 (1892 - 1978), Isaac Greenaway aged 6 (1895 - 1951), Alexander Greenaway aged 5, Marion Greenaway aged 1 (1900 - 1977). Alexander's Pension was awarded to his father John on the 05/02/1919.

Cemetery / Memorial Information

Coeuvres-et-Valsery Communal Cemetery contains five Commonwealth burials of the First World War, all dating from the 21st July 1918, and the graves of six Second World War airmen. Four of the First World War men where from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and one was from the Black Watch.

Additional Information

The 9th (Service) Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 08/07/1915 and were part of the 44th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. Alexander arrived 6 days later. Alexander is listed as 9th BATTALION on the Coatbridge Memorial (his previous Battalion). The 1/4th (City of Dundee) Battalion Black Watch joined the 118th Brigade in France on the 29/02/1916, amalgamated with 1/5th (Angus and Dundee) Battalion on the 15/03/1916 and became the 4/5th (Dundee and Angus) Battalion and were part of the 118th Brigade, 39th Division. The Battalion transferred to the 44th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division on the 05/06/1918. Alexander was killed instantly by a bomb as he chatted to comrades from the 1/8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as he waited on the Battalion arriving from a neighbouring village. From the Battalion War Diary : "BILLETS in CUISE LA MOTTE 21/07/1918 - C.Q.M. Sergeant. A.GREENAWAY was Killed by a bomb dropped by an Enemy Aeroplane at COEUVRES, while on duty with advanced Billeting Party". SEE PHOTOS x 11 FOR THE 4/5th BATTALION WAR DIARY JULY - AUGUST 1918 (this includes the attack on Buzancy by the Battalion 7 days after Alexander fell). Four men from the Argyll's fell with Alexander and are buried alongside him. They are : Corporal H. J. Bullin (S/23969) Died 21st July 1918. Husband of Mrs. E. M. Bullin, of 5, Bolsover St., Hucknall, Notts. Lance Corporal Simon Thomas Cameron Common (18995) Died 21st July 1918, aged 19. Son of William Bell Common and Isabella Common, of North Lodge, Bargany, Girvan, Ayrshire. Native of Tathhill, Kirkpatrick, Dumfriesshire. His Headstone bears the inscription "For His Country He Fell". Sergeant H. Kinsella (303279) D.C.M., M.M. and Bar, Died 21st July 1918. Husband of Mrs. M. Kinsella, of 60, Georges St., Bonhill, Dumbartonshire and Lance Corporal Robert Stewart (23873) Died 21st July 1918, aged 39. Husband of Lizzie L. W. Stewart, of F, York Corner, Perth. His Headstone bears the inscription "Father In Thy Gracious Keeping Leave We Now Thy Servant Sleeping". These are the only 5 men from WW1 in the Cemetery. 6 graves of WW2 Airmen lie beside them (see photos x 7). The 6 WW2 Airmen were : R/153559 Warrant Officer Class I Robert John Wilson, 102 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 29th June 1944, aged 21. Son of David and Sarah Wilson, of Palmerston, Ontario, Canada. His headstone bears the inscription "Peacefully Sleeping". 613715 Sergeant George Edward Frost, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force, died 29th June 1944, aged 34. Son of Alfred Mark and Emma Frost, of Northampton. His headstone bears the inscription "To Live In The Hearts Of Those He Left Behind Is Not To Die. Duty Nobly Done". 1006198 Flight Sergeant James Alexander Ligertwood, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 29th June 1944. 177070 Pilot Officer John Messer, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 29th June 1944, aged 21. Son of Robert John and Maud Messer, of Morriston, Glamorgan. His headstone bears the inscription "Silent Thoughts, Tears Unseen, Keep Your Memory Ever Green". 409742 Pilot Officer Leslie Clifford Potter, Royal Australian Air Force, died 29th June 1944, aged 24. Son of Joseph William and Ethel Beatrice Potter; husband of Lorna Constance Potter, of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "Duty Nobly Done". 173133 Pilot Officer Henry Rogers, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 29th June 1944, aged 31. Son of Florence Ethel Rogers; husband of Mary L. Rogers. An Army Chaplain described Alexander as a "most cheery, genial comrade" with one of his Officers stating "he was one of the best liked men in the Battalion" (see Newspaper clippings).
